23rd Japanese Speech Contest supported by JMA The 23rd Japanese Speech Contest was hosted and organized by the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar, the Japan Foundation Yangon Cultural Center and the Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni (MAJA) on November12 and JMA supported the event as usual.Last year, both the preliminary rounds and the finals were held online due to concerns about the spread of COVID-19. Winner of the 21st Japanese Speech Contest Held in Yangon Visits Japan The winner of the 21st Japanese Speech Contest, which JMA supported, held in Yangon in November 2020, visited Japan to participate in the 36th Japanese Speech Presentation Event organized by JOEA (Japan Overseas Enterprises Association) and co-organized by ASEAN-JAPAN CENTRE.Originally, she was scheduled to come to Japan in 2020, but due to the spread of COVID-19, the presentation in Tokyo was cancelled. The JMA sponsors the winner's round-trip air ticket between Yangon and Tokyo as a complimentary gift. She gave a speech on the theme of judo in the 36 th speech presentation on October 27. In her speech, she said that in future she will try to learn Japanese more and take more lessons in judo to become a bridge between Japan and Myanmar and contribute to the exchange between the two countries. Excellently she won a prize of Chairman of JOEA. Prior to this presentation, the association held an encouragement rally for her and presented her with a Japanese book from Chairman Watanabe. Watanabe attends the opening ceremony for the first batch of students of the Elderly Care Training Course A ceremony was held at the Central Training School, Dagon Myothit (North) Township, Yangon Region to inaugurate the first batch of students in a training course on care for the elderly. At the ceremony, Union Minister for Border Affairs Lt-Gen Tun Tun Naung and JMA Chairman, Mr. H. Watanabe gave speeches and explained the purpose of opening the nursing care training course. Congratulatory Message from JMA Chairman Mr. H. Watanabe 20th Anniversary of MAJA(the Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni) On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of MAJA, JMA Chairman sent a congratulatory message to it. MAJA was established on December 10, 2001, the National Day of the Union of Myanmar, by 49 members. Many of the founding members were students in Japan during World War II (1943-1945) and are also patrons of the association.MAJA has been contributing to the society through its main activities such as spread of Japanese language including the Japanese Speech Contest, which JMA also support, support for study in Japan, and cultural exchange with Japan. More than 3,000 people are currently members. |

22nd Japanese Speech Contest supported by JMA The 22nd Japanese Speech Contest was hosted and organized by the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar, the Japan Foundation Yangon Cultural Center and the Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni (MAJA) on November 13 and JMA supported the event as usual. Under the situation of the spread of COVID-19 in Myanmar, it was held online basis as in the previous year.78 people from all over Myanmar applied for the contest and 15 people who passed the preliminary contest participated in the final contest on the day. 21st Japanese Speech Contest supported by JMA The 21st Japanese Speech Contest was hosted and organized by the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar, the Japan Foundation Yangon Cultural Center and the Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni (MAJA) in Yangon on November 21 and JMA supported the event as usual. Under the situation of the spread of COVID-19 in Myanmar, both the qualifying session and the final were held online basis this year, and the number of qualifying participants were about a half of the average year.The final was held by 15 persons who passed the first screening, and after the screening, the top 3 winners and a good performer were announced. Every year, the first place winner participates in a program held in Tokyo as a representative of Myanmar, where excellent performers from ASEAN countries gathered, but unfortunately the Tokyo program was canceled this year due to the COVID-19. The conference of Project for Enhancement of Medical Education (PEME) in Myanmar JMA has been supporting the independent development of the education system of basic medicine, knowledge and technology in Myanmar. In particular, the concept is that Myanmar students who have studied in Japan through JICA's medical education enhancement project (PEME) will become core human resources and then develop Myanmar human resources in Myanmar. Mr. So Han, Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as the new Ambassador to Japan On September 24, the Myanmar government announced the appointment of Mr. Soe Han, the current Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as the new Ambassador to Japan.The appointment of the incumbent Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs as the Japanese Ambassador following Ambassador Mr. Myint Thu is considered to be a sign of the Myanmar government's intention to emphasize relations with Japan. Mr. So Han joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar in 1993 after graduating from the Department of Physics at Yangon University and now he is at the age of 54. Having worked at the Embassy of Myanmar in Thailand and the Embassy of Myanmar in China, he was appointed as Permanent Secretary of Foreign Affairs to succeed Mr. Myint Thu from August last year. From 2002 to 2004, he studied abroad at the International University of Japan in Niigata, and from 2005 to 2008, he worked as the first secretary at the Myanmar Embassy in Tokyo. JMA donated about 300,000 masks to the Myanmar Embassy JMA donated about 300,000 face masks to the Myanmar Embassy with the cooperation of “Japan Only one Partnership”, a membership organization of JMA. As an aid to measures against the infection of COVID-19 in Myanmar, it is intended to support people who are making efforts at the forefront of treatment and prevention of spread of infection, especially in the medical field. The donated face masks will be distributed to Naypyidaw (Ministry of Health and Sports), Yangon Region, Mandalay Region, Ministry of Border Affairs and Police etc. This was the second time for JMA to donate the face masks, following the beginning of May, and Ambassador Mr. Myint Thu presented a letter of appreciation to JMA.Click here for Photo |

Opening Ceremony of IUJ’s Myanmar Office International University of Japan (IUJ) has opened a Myanmar office, and the opening ceremony was held on March 13 in Yangon. JMA Chairman Mr. H. Watanabe and Director Mr. Y. Watanabe attended the ceremony. Since its establishment in 1982, 225 persons from Myanmar were graduated from IUJ. Many graduates are active in various fields like Myanmar government, finance, education and business. The purpose of the Myanmar office is to further expand the local network of such graduates from IUJ. The opening ceremony was attended by more than 100 people, including alumni from IUJ, and was started by Opening Remarks from the Dean of the Graduate School of International Relations of IUJ, Dr. Maung Aung Myoe, who made efforts for opening the office. Welcome Reception for Myanmar Ambassador, U Myint Thu JMA hosted the welcome reception for Myanmar Ambassador, U Myint Thu on February 27. Many people with close ties to Myanmar, including executives from private companies and so on attended the event. The new ambassador, U Myint Thu worked at the Myanmar Embassy in Tokyo as the third secretary from 1993 to 1997 and has a deep knowledge of Japanese history and culture. His former post in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nay Pyi Taw was permanent secretary and it was so important in Myanmar. JMA Director attended the Presentation Ceremony of MJA’s Scholarship The scholarship presentation ceremony hosted by the Myanmar Japan Association (MJA), the counterpart of Japan Myanmar Association (JMA) in Myanmar, was held in Yangon. On this occasion, JMA Director, Mr. Y. Watanabe attended the ceremony at the request of MJA. At the ceremony, MJA Chairman, U Saw Hla Min explained reasons for providing the scholarship and its program. MJA has called for outstanding second-year students from 8 Myanmar universities who are facing financial hardship in their pursuit of education. 8 universities are Yangon University of Foreign Languages (Japanese Language), Mandalay University of Foreign Languages (Japanese Language), University of Education (Yangon), University of Education (Sagaing), University of Economics (Yangon), Technological University (Yangon) and so on. MJA selected 82 students from the 8 universities and scholarship is K500,000 each for academic year 2020. |

The officials who came to Japan were key persons as director general and deputy director general of the ministry. Handover Ceremony of Myanmar-Japan Technical Development Center at YTU JICA promoted the "Project for Enhancing Technological Universities in Myanmar" by grant support with the purpose to enhance the practical education capacity of the leading engineering universities of Myanmar. Winner of the 20th Japanese Speech Contest in Yangon came to Japan Ms. Tin Nandar Linn, a winner of the 20th Japanese Speech Contest held in this August in Yangon and supported by JMA, came to Japan to make her Japanese language speech in the 34th Japanese Speech Presentation Event on October 10. It was organized by JOEA (Japan Overseas Enterprises Association) and co-organized by ASEAN-JAPAN CENTRE. In the Japanese Speech Presentation Event by 10 winners of Overseas Japanese Speech Contests in ASEAN countries, Ms. Tin Nadar Linn won the award of Secretary General of ASEAN-JAPAN CENTRE. Since the establishment of this award and the award of Chairman of JOEA in 2016, the Myanmar representative has been achieving to receive either award for the fourth consecutive year. PCs were donated by JMA to the University of Medical Technology, Yangon JMA donated 4 personal computers to the University of Medical Technology, Yangon (UMT), which is implementing the “The Technical Cooperation Project for Human Resource Development of Medical Engineering” with support from Japan. The PCs are used to create a database of thousands of medical devices owned by hospitals in Myanmar and use it for future maintenance and management. PCs will be installed in two locations in Yangon and one each in Naypyitaw and Mandalay, and will be operated by Myanmar Medical Engineers who have learned with support from Japan. Mr. Y. 20th Japanese Speech Contest in Yangon supported by JMA The 20th Japanese Speech Contest was hosted and organized by the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar, the Japan Foundation Yangon and the Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni (MAJA). It was held on August 25 in Yangon and JMA supported the event. 15 persons who had passed the first screening of Japanese Speech Contest out of 104 applicants, performed the final presentation of Japanese language speech on their own topics. They were on various fields such as the first acquaintance and interaction with a Japanese who would support life and education, hopeful dreams in the future, even serious topic like duty of people and so on. The speeches impressed the audience at the venue. Ms. Tin Nandar Linn won the first prize at the contest. Closing Ceremony on the Project for Enhancement of Medical Education (PEME) JMA Chairman, Mr. Watanabe attended the Closing Ceremony on the Project for Enhancement of Medical Education (PEME) supported by JICA at a hotel in Yangon on August 6. This project was suggested by JMA and then started from April 2015 in response to a request from former President Mr. Thein Sein to JMA Chairman.53 out of 67 doctors & engineers who successfully completed the training of PEME in Japan attended the ceremony. Permanent Secretary of Ministry for Health & Sports, Dr. Thet Khaing Win, Japanese Ambassador Mr. Maruyama, on behalf of 6 National Universities Network, President of Okayama University Hospital, Dr. Kanazawa and JICA Myanmar Office Chief Representative, Mr. Karasawa made speeches at the ceremony. JMA Director inspected National MSMEs Products Trade Fair & Contest National Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Products Trade Fair & Contest was held at MICC II in Naypyitaw for March 22-24. Vice President, Mr. Myint Swe is Chairman of MSMEs Development Working Committee and the committee hosted this national event. The concept of this kind of exhibition was originally introduced and proposed by JMA Chairman, Mr. H. Watanabe to Ministry of Industry to develop MSMEs in Myanmar. The 1st exhibition was held in Mandalay in February, 2018 and exhibitions were continuously held in 9 regions and states for 1 year. This national event in Naypyitaw was the 10th exhibition for national competition and many people visited MICC II. JMA Director, Mr. Y. JMA Director made a survey to find local specialty in Myanmar As a JMA’s support to develop local specialty in Myanmar and promote the products of Myanmar to overseas market, JMA director visited and inspected a factory of health-care products made from natural herb. It took about 10 hours by car to reach the factory in Indaw of Sagaing Region from Mandalay. The company displayed its products in the 7th exhibition of MSMEs’ products in Yangon in last November and it drew interest from visitors. Outstanding Students came to Japan from Myanmar Myanmar Japan Association (MJA) has been organizing to send outstanding students to Japan since 2014 and JMA has been supporting this event. The 5th event in this year, a total of 18 students including 6 students from Japanese Language Course of Yangon & Mandalay Foreign Languages University and 12 students from high schools in Myanmar visited Japan. The outstanding teenagers stayed with host families in Miyagi Prefecture and had cultural exchange with young people of same generation by cooperation and support of Miyagi MeiSen Academy. JMA hosted a dinner reception for the students and Myanmar Ambassador also attended this event. The students visited the House of Representatives of the National Diet by JMA’s arrangement, Sky Tree Tower, a plant of beverages in Tokushima, the Otsuka Museum of Art and so on. The agriculture is the most important sector for Myanmar. They visited Niigata Prefecture as it is one of the biggest agriculture prefectures in Japan. Her subject was “Children who gave me a dream” and she showed her will to improve a situation that would not allow children to have education because of their poverty. Her speech moved all audience in the venue. She will participate in ASEAN Speech Contest in coming October in Tokyo. It was the 3rd exhibition hosted by Ministry of Industry. Small and Medium Enterprises Development Committee (SMEDC) Chairman and Vice President Mr. Myint Swe, SMEDC Vice Chairman and Union Minister for Industry Mr. Khin Maung Cho and JMA Director Mr. Y. Watanabe attended the exhibition. The concept of this exhibition was originally introduced and proposed by JMA Chairman to Ministry of Industry to develop SME in Myanmar. Winner of the 18th Japanese Speech Contest in Yangon came to Japan Ms. Khin Sabai Sint, a winner of the 18th Japanese Speech Contest held in this August in Yangon came to Japan to present her Japanese language speech for Japan Overseas Enterprises Association (JOEA) that hosted and organized the 32nd winners’ event of Japanese speech. JMA awarded a prize of round trip airplane ticket to Tokyo to her in this August. Winners from Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia also participated in this event. They stayed in Japan for about a week and had factory tour, opportunity to have cultural exchange with people of same generation in Japan and so on. The event of Japanese language speech was held by JOEA on October 26 in Tokyo. Outstanding Students came to Japan from Myanmar Myanmar Japan Association (MJA) has been organizing to send outstanding students to Japan since 2014 and JMA has been supporting this event. This year, a total of 16 students including 5 students from Japanese Language Course of Yangon Foreign Languages University and 11 students from high schools in Myanmar visited Japan. The outstanding teenagers stayed with host families and had cultural exchange with young people of same generation by cooperation and support of Miyagi MeiSen Academy. JMA hosted a dinner reception on October 17 and in return for this, students showed performances of songs and dances in Myanmar. On October 18, the students visited the House of Representatives of the National Diet by JMA’s arrangement. The 4th Study Meeting on Human Resource Development for Medical Devices in Myanmar The 4th study meeting was held on May 18, 2017 in Tokyo and a number of people such as relevant ministries and agencies, universities, related technical association societies attended the meeting. The latest situation of setting up educational programs to develop Medical Engineers at University of Medical Technology, Yangon was introduced to the attendees. It has been supported and promoted mainly by Okayama University, Japan Association for Clinical Engineers (JACE) and Japanese Society for Technology of Blood purification. Under support of JICA, it is planned to have a research in Myanmar to start the course in FY2018 and the subject discussed in this study meeting is going forward to be materialized. Moreover, in the study meeting, NIPRO Corporation as a medical device manufacturer introduced its activities in overseas market and then opinions were exchanged among attendees. JMA is going to support the Human Resource Development for Medical Devices in Myanmar. |

The 3rd Study Meeting on Human Resource Development for Medical Devices in Myanmar The 3rd study meeting on human resource development for medical devices in Myanmar was held and a number of people such as relevant ministries and agencies, universities, related technical association societies attended. On that day, Ms. Junko Sato, Office Director, Office of International Cooperation, Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA) gave a lecture on PMDA's activities in Asia, then FUJIFILM Corporation and Sysmex Corporation as medical device manufacturers. In addition, there was a report from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry on the public and private delegation dispatched to Myanmar in FY2016. The 1st Information Exchange Meeting on Technical Intern Trainees Development The 1st ”Information Exchange Meeting" on technical intern trainees development was hosted by JMA in Tokyo and 39 agencies of supervising organization that receive the trainees from Myanmar attended this event from all over the country.Mr. Sengoku, Vice Chairman of MJA made an opening remarks and keynote speech to the attendees. The 2nd study tour and briefing on TVET survey The 2nd study tour and a briefing session to concerned organizations and persons from private companies in Japan were carried out for 3 days from October 4 on Myanmar Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). The survey was entrusted to JMA from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Persons in charge from Myanmar Ministry of Education(MOE), Ministry of Industry(MOI), Ministry of Labor, Immigration and Population(MOLIP) and Myanmar Engineering Society(MES) participated in the study tour and they visited Polytechnic University (Human Resources Development University) in Kodaira, Tokyo and also Amada, a private company in Isehara, Kanagawa prefecture to develop comprehensive Knowledge on TVET. At the briefing session where domestic companies and organizations participated, a draft of the final survey report was explained and in the speech, Mr. Sengoku, Vice Chairman of JMA pointed out the importance of TVET and emphasized the necessity of Japan's support to Myanmar. The 2nd Meeting on Myanmar Medical Equipment Human Resource Development Study In Myanmar, in addition to shortages of human resources of physicians and nurses, a shortage of human resources such as engineers who can utilize medical equipment etc. is also one of issues from a view of supporting medical system. JMA is conducting study sessions with relevant ministries, agencies and organizations etc. in order to examine how to support the training of medical human resources in Myanmar who have knowledge and experience of medical equipment etc. The 2nd study meeting was held on September 26. In the meeting, Dr. Misawa from Japanese Association of Medical Technologists gave a lecture on the direction of support based on experiences of clinical laboratory technique activities in developing countries and Dr. Kokubo from Kitasato University gave a lecture on technical support activities for hemodialysis therapy in Myanmar. After the lectures, active opinions were exchanged among the attendees. JMA will continue the study meeting also from now on to consider effective and efficient way of support for Myanmar. |

This year, 15 students came to Japan as the 4th generation students. Interim report meeting on TVET survey at MES in Yangon An interim reporting session on TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) survey was held on September 13 at MES (Myanmar Engineering Society) in Yangon.The purpose of this session was to explain the content of interim survey report in this August in Japan and to hear opinions from Myanmar side. About 120 persons including officials from both countries, representatives from related organizations, top management from member companies of MES etc. attended the session. Following the speech by Mr. Maruyama, Minister of Japanese Embassy and also Dr. Sai Kyaw Naing Oo, Deputy Director General, Department of Technical and Vocational Education, Ministry of Education, the session of interim report explanation started. In the Q & A, the attendees stated their opinions of requesting urgent actions to enhance vocational training. The final survey report will be released in October. |

The 17th Japanese Language Speech Contest was held in Yangon The 17th Japanese Language Speech Contest was hosted and organized by the Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni (MAJA) and the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar. It was held on August 28 in Yangon and JMA participated as co-sponsor. 15 persons who passed the primary examination among 53 applicants, performed Japanese language speech on the day. Mr. Watanabe, Chairman of JMA had a meeting with Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation Dr. Tun Win, Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, Mr. Naing Kyi Win, Director for Department of Agriculture Research and other Myanmar officials visited Japan in July by the invitation of Japanese government and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The purpose of the Deputy Minister's visiting to Japan is to make inspections on organization and mechanism of National federation of Agricultural Cooperative Association (JA) and widely observe Japanese agricultural policies. 10 Students from Myanmar graduated from International University of Japan JMA has been supporting Myanmar students to study at International University of Japan (IUJ) with the cooperation of JICA and the Nippon Foundation since 3 years ago. This year, 10 students from Myanmar graduated successfully from IUJ. Launched the 1st Study Meeting on Human Resource Development for Medical Devices in Myanmar In addition to shortages of human resources of physicians and nurses in Myanmar, a shortage of human resources such as engineers who can utilize medical equipment is an issue from a view of supporting medical system. JMA has decided to aggressively support the training of Myanmar medical human resources who have knowledge and experience of medical equipment in addition to JMA’s support for launching a project by 6 national universities’ medical faculty department to enhance medical education in Myanmar. In order to examine strategic ways for development of human resources in Myanmar, a study group was organized by related ministries, agencies and organizations etc. and then the 1st study meeting was held on June 10. Professor Kimata of Okayama University and Vice Chairman Dr. Matsumoto of the Japan Federation of Medical Devices Association (JFMDA) gave lectures to attendees and the opinions were exchanged aggressively in the meeting.
