The 78th Anniversary Armed Forces Day of Myanmar

The reception for the 78th Anniversary Armed Forces Day of Myanmar was held at Myanmar Embassy in Tokyo.
Last year, the event was not held due to the COVID-19. But this year it was held with so many guests. JMA Chairman, Mr. H. Watanabe received an invitation from the embassy and attended the ceremony.

The 75th Anniversary of the Independence Day of Myanmar

The ceremony for the 75th Anniversary of the Independence Day of Myanmar was held at the Ayeyarwady Hall of the Embassy of Myanmar. It was the first time in three years that the ceremony was held due to the COVID-19. And it was a grand occasion. After the 75th anniversary speech by Ambassador So Han, JMA Chairman, Mr. H. Watanabe gave the first congratulatory speech on behalf of the guests.

23rd Japanese Speech Contest supported by JMA

The 23rd Japanese Speech Contest was hosted and organized by the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar, the Japan Foundation Yangon Cultural Center and the Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni (MAJA) on November12 and JMA supported the event as usual.
Last year, both the preliminary rounds and the finals were held online due to concerns about the spread of COVID-19. However, this year's competition was a mix of in-person and online contests and an event conveyed a sense of enthusiasm.

Winner of the 21st Japanese Speech Contest Held in Yangon Visits Japan

The winner of the 21st Japanese Speech Contest, which JMA supported, held in Yangon in November 2020, visited Japan to participate in the 36th Japanese Speech Presentation Event organized by JOEA (Japan Overseas Enterprises Association) and co-organized by ASEAN-JAPAN CENTRE.
Originally, she was scheduled to come to Japan in 2020, but due to the spread of COVID-19, the presentation in Tokyo was cancelled.
The JMA sponsors the winner's round-trip air ticket between Yangon and Tokyo as a complimentary gift.
She gave a speech on the theme of judo in the 36 th speech presentation on October 27. In her speech, she said that in future she will try to learn Japanese more and take more lessons in judo to become a bridge between Japan and Myanmar and contribute to the exchange between the two countries.
Excellently she won a prize of Chairman of JOEA.
Prior to this presentation, the association held an encouragement rally for her and presented her with a Japanese book from Chairman Watanabe.

JMA Chairman, Mr. H. Watanabe attends the opening ceremony for the first batch of students of the Elderly Care Training Course

A ceremony was held at the Central Training School, Dagon Myothit (North) Township, Yangon Region to inaugurate the first batch of students in a training course on care for the elderly. At the ceremony, Union Minister for Border Affairs Lt-Gen Tun Tun Naung and JMA Chairman, Mr. H. Watanabe gave speeches and explained the purpose of opening the nursing care training course. In addition, the representatives of the trainees were presented with a catalog of financial support and teaching materials during their training.

Congratulatory Message from JMA Chairman Mr. H. Watanabe

20th Anniversary of MAJA(the Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni) On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of MAJA, JMA Chairman sent a congratulatory message to it. MAJA was established on December 10, 2001, the National Day of the Union of Myanmar, by 49 members. Many of the founding members were students in Japan during World War II (1943-1945) and are also patrons of the association.
MAJA has been contributing to the society through its main activities such as spread of Japanese language including the Japanese Speech Contest, which JMA also support, support for study in Japan, and cultural exchange with Japan. More than 3,000 people are currently members.

22nd Japanese Speech Contest supported by JMA

The 22nd Japanese Speech Contest was hosted and organized by the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar, the Japan Foundation Yangon Cultural Center and the Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni (MAJA) on November 13 and JMA supported the event as usual. Under the situation of the spread of COVID-19 in Myanmar, it was held online basis as in the previous year.
78 people from all over Myanmar applied for the contest and 15 people who passed the preliminary contest participated in the final contest on the day. In the presence of H.E. Mr. MARUYAMA Ichiro, Ambassador of Japan to Myanmar, five people were awarded prizes.

JMA Director donated relief supplies to medical personnel working for the Covid-19

JMA Director, Mr. Y. Watanabe had a meeting with medical personnel working at the Covid-19 Treatment Center in Yangon at the end of September to discuss the latest infection situation and trends in the number of infected people, etc.
He donated food, beverages and other relief supplies directly to the representatives of them to appreciate their hard work.

JMA Director visited Kitajima in Yangon

JMA Director Mr. Y. Watanabe, together with JETRO Yangon Office Director Mr.K.Tanaka, at the end of September, visited Kitajima Co.,Ltd.in Yangon. It maintains the supply of oxygen needed for treatment at medical facilities in Myanmar, where the COVID-19 infection continues.
Mr. Moe Lwin, Director of Kitajima, took us on a tour of the plant and we heard firsthand about the hardships faced by local operations, and gave him encouragement appreciating their hard work.

Welcome reception for new Ambassador H.E. U Soe Han

The welcome reception for new Ambassador to Japan, H.E. U Soe Han was held by JMA. The reception, which was equipped with measures to prevent the infection of COVID-19, was attended by important persons in the political and business world, officials from related ministries and agencies, member companies of JMA, and many people who are closely related to Myanmar.
New Ambassador, H.E. U Soe Han studied abroad at the International University in Niigata, and his previous position was important as the Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar. At the reception, many expectations were expressed to the New Ambassador by participants.

Directors’ Conference of JMA

On December 2, the conference was held in Tokyo with the participation of the directors of JMA. At the conference, JMA Chairman, Mr. Watanabe reported about the Myanmar general election held on November 8 under the situation of COVID-19 spread and exchanged opinions with the directors. In addition, the new Ambassador to Japan, H.E. U Soe Han was introduced to the directors of JMA at the conference.

21st Japanese Speech Contest supported by JMA

The 21st Japanese Speech Contest was hosted and organized by the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar, the Japan Foundation Yangon Cultural Center and the Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni (MAJA) in Yangon on November 21 and JMA supported the event as usual. Under the situation of the spread of COVID-19 in Myanmar, both the qualifying session and the final were held online basis this year, and the number of qualifying participants were about a half of the average year.
The final was held by 15 persons who passed the first screening, and after the screening, the top 3 winners and a good performer were announced. Every year, the first place winner participates in a program held in Tokyo as a representative of Myanmar, where excellent performers from ASEAN countries gathered, but unfortunately the Tokyo program was canceled this year due to the COVID-19.

The conference of Project for Enhancement of Medical Education (PEME) in Myanmar

JMA has been supporting the independent development of the education system of basic medicine, knowledge and technology in Myanmar. In particular, the concept is that Myanmar students who have studied in Japan through JICA's medical education enhancement project (PEME) will become core human resources and then develop Myanmar human resources in Myanmar. A web conference was held by JICA with the participation of many medical professionals and JMA to promote future projects.

Mr. So Han, Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as the new Ambassador to Japan

On September 24, the Myanmar government announced the appointment of Mr. Soe Han, the current Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as the new Ambassador to Japan.
The appointment of the incumbent Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs as the Japanese Ambassador following Ambassador Mr. Myint Thu is considered to be a sign of the Myanmar government's intention to emphasize relations with Japan.
Mr. So Han joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar in 1993 after graduating from the Department of Physics at Yangon University and now he is at the age of 54. Having worked at the Embassy of Myanmar in Thailand and the Embassy of Myanmar in China, he was appointed as Permanent Secretary of Foreign Affairs to succeed Mr. Myint Thu from August last year.
From 2002 to 2004, he studied abroad at the International University of Japan in Niigata, and from 2005 to 2008, he worked as the first secretary at the Myanmar Embassy in Tokyo.

JMA donated about 300,000 masks to the Myanmar Embassy

JMA donated about 300,000 face masks to the Myanmar Embassy with the cooperation of “Japan Only one Partnership”, a membership organization of JMA. As an aid to measures against the infection of COVID-19 in Myanmar, it is intended to support people who are making efforts at the forefront of treatment and prevention of spread of infection, especially in the medical field. The donated face masks will be distributed to Naypyidaw (Ministry of Health and Sports), Yangon Region, Mandalay Region, Ministry of Border Affairs and Police etc. This was the second time for JMA to donate the face masks, following the beginning of May, and Ambassador Mr. Myint Thu presented a letter of appreciation to JMA.

The 9th Annual Meeting of Directors & General Meeting of Members

JMA held the Annual meeting of Directors and then General Meeting of Members in a conference room of Constitution Memorial Center on June 25. More than 60 persons attended the Annual General meeting as directors and members of JMA. The statement of accounts for FY2019, budget & activities plan & policy for FY2020, resignation of directors and appointment of a new director, all of agendas were approved and accepted in the meeting. After the meeting, Mr. M. Karasawa, former JICA Myanmar Office Chief Representative, gave a very meaningful lecture entitled "April 2017-March 2020, Review of my stay in Myanmar".

JMA donated face masks

In order to contribute to prevent COVID-19, JMA donated disposable face masks to support Myanmar people who are active in Japan and those who are making efforts at the front lines of medical treatment and infection spread prevention in medical field of Japan. In early May, JMA donated 10,000 masks to the Myanmar Embassy in Japan and 40,000 masks to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare in cooperation with a membership organization of JMA, “Japan Only one Partnership”.

Opening Ceremony of IUJ’s Myanmar Office

International University of Japan (IUJ) has opened a Myanmar office, and the opening ceremony was held on March 13 in Yangon. JMA Chairman Mr. H. Watanabe and Director Mr. Y. Watanabe attended the ceremony. Since its establishment in 1982, 225 persons from Myanmar were graduated from IUJ. Many graduates are active in various fields like Myanmar government, finance, education and business. The purpose of the Myanmar office is to further expand the local network of such graduates from IUJ. The opening ceremony was attended by more than 100 people, including alumni from IUJ, and was started by Opening Remarks from the Dean of the Graduate School of International Relations of IUJ, Dr. Maung Aung Myoe, who made efforts for opening the office. JMA Chairman Mr. Watanabe, Embassy of Japan, JMA, JICA, The Nippon Foundation, Yangon University of Foreign Languages and many others delivered congratulatory address in the ceremony.

JMA Chairman & Director visited Myanmar

JMA Chairman, Mr. H. Watanabe & Director, Mr. Y. Watanabe visited Naypyitaw and Yangon in early March. JMA had meetings with Union Minister for Office of the State Counsellor, Union Minister for Investment and Foreign Economic Relations, executives of Myanmar Japan Thilawa Development, economic experts, executives of Japanese companies in Yangon. JMA exchanged views and opinion on the current situation of economic activities, the impact of COVID-19, future investment prospects to Myanmar, the general election scheduled in this year, Rakhine State issue and so on. In the meetings, JMA also reported that JMA hosted the welcome reception for Myanmar Ambassador, U Myint Thu in the last February and it was well attended with the participation of many members of JMA. Moreover, in Yangon, JMA received a courtesy call from NLD youth members.

Welcome Reception for Myanmar Ambassador, U Myint Thu

JMA hosted the welcome reception for Myanmar Ambassador, U Myint Thu on February 27. Many people with close ties to Myanmar, including executives from private companies and so on attended the event. The new ambassador, U Myint Thu worked at the Myanmar Embassy in Tokyo as the third secretary from 1993 to 1997 and has a deep knowledge of Japanese history and culture. His former post in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nay Pyi Taw was permanent secretary and it was so important in Myanmar. It is highly expected that he will be so active in various fields in Japan.

A Reception for staff from Ministry of Transport and Communication

At the invitation of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, 20 young male and female staff from the Ministry of Transport and Communications came to Japan to attend training course mainly in the field of communications. On this occasion, JMA organized round-table reception with the staff. At the reception, JMA Chairman, Mr. Watanabe talked about the history of support from Japan to Myanmar and the future direction by listening to the birthplace of each staff. JMA Chairman encouraged the young staff to succeed in the future.

JMA Director attended the Presentation Ceremony of MJA’s Scholarship

The scholarship presentation ceremony hosted by the Myanmar Japan Association (MJA), the counterpart of Japan Myanmar Association (JMA) in Myanmar, was held in Yangon. On this occasion, JMA Director, Mr. Y. Watanabe attended the ceremony at the request of MJA. At the ceremony, MJA Chairman, U Saw Hla Min explained reasons for providing the scholarship and its program. MJA has called for outstanding second-year students from 8 Myanmar universities who are facing financial hardship in their pursuit of education. 8 universities are Yangon University of Foreign Languages (Japanese Language), Mandalay University of Foreign Languages (Japanese Language), University of Education (Yangon), University of Education (Sagaing), University of Economics (Yangon), Technological University (Yangon) and so on. MJA selected 82 students from the 8 universities and scholarship is K500,000 each for academic year 2020.

Meeting with Higher Officials from Ministry of Education

JICA invited three higher officials from the Ministry of Education to Japan. The officials who came to Japan were key persons as director general and deputy director general of the ministry. On this occasion, JMA organized the meeting with them and exchanged views and opinions. We talked about current situation of education in Myanmar including the project for the revision of curriculum in primary school in Myanmar as well as requests from the ministry. They expressed a strong demand that the government-based program for accepting international students from Myanmar should be continued also from now on.

The 72nd Anniversary of the Independence Day of Myanmar

The ceremony for the 72nd Anniversary of the Independence Day of Myanmar was held by the Embassy of Myanmar (EOM) on January 24. More than 400 guests attended the ceremony in Ayeyarwady Hall of EOM. JMA Chairman, Mr. H. Watanabe invited Ambassador Mr. Myint Thu and main guests on the stage of ceremony and then made toast speech for the anniversary.

JMA Director attended opening ceremony of Japanese Language Class

JMA has been supporting to open Japanese language class in a vocational training school under Ministry of Border Affairs according to the request by the ministry. On January 13, the opening ceremony of the class was held at the Central Vocational Training School in Yangon with attending by selected 25 students as the first generation. JMA Director, Mr. Y. Watanabe attended the ceremony and congratulated the opening.

Handover Ceremony of Myanmar-Japan Technical Development Center at YTU

JICA promoted the "Project for Enhancing Technological Universities in Myanmar" by grant support with the purpose to enhance the practical education capacity of the leading engineering universities of Myanmar. The support for this project was requested by former president Mr. Thein Sein directly to JMA Chairman, Mr. H. Watanabe. The construction of facility and installation of equipment were completed at Yangon Technological University (YTU) and Handover Ceremony was held on December 26, 2019. JMA Director, Mr. Y. Watanabe attended the ceremony and delivered message from JMA Chairman.

A delegation of Komeito Chief Representative visited Myanmar from December 21 and the JMA Director joined the delegation. They had meetings with State Counsellor and other key persons in Myanmar. They visited Thilawa SEZ and observed latest situation of Thilawa. The delegation deepened friendly relationship between two countries.

Meeting of JMA Directors

JMA held a meeting of directors on December 10 in Tokyo. JMA Chairman, Mr. H. Watanabe reported JMA’s activities after this June and recent situation of Myanmar to the directors. Main activities of JMA were “the Closing Ceremony on the Project for Enhancement of Medical Education (PEME)”, JMA’s Technical Intern Trainees Section had been closed and JMA’s all pre-examination works had been successfully transferred to Myanmar Embassy in Tokyo, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing of Commander-in-Chief of Defense Services in Myanmar came to Japan, JMA supported the 2nd Myanmar Investment Conference organized by JETRO, JMA invited a delegation led by USDP Chairman U Than Htay, JMA Invited a delegation of NLD Youth and so on.

NLD Youth delegation visited Japan

Upon request of NLD, JMA invited and received 6 persons of NLD Youth also in this year. During their stay in Japan, they visited Isogo coal-fired thermal power station, National Institute of Information and communications technology (NICT), Organization for Small & Medium Enterprise and Regional Innovation, House of National Diet, JICA and so on. , They had opportunities to increase insight of Japan and exchanged views & opinions on Japanese politics.

JMA Chairman & Director visited Myanmar

JMA Chairman, Mr. H. Watanabe & Director, Mr. Y. Watanabe visited Yangon and Naypyitaw in early November. In Yangon, JMA had meetings with Union Minister for Labour, Immigration and population, Union Minister for Office of the State Counsellor, Union Minister for Border Affair, Permanent Secretary for Investment and Foreign Economic Relations and so on. JMA reported that JMA’s Technical Intern Trainees Section had been closed and all pre-examination works had been successfully transferred to Myanmar Embassy in Tokyo and then exchanged views on investment to Myanmar, human development, Rakhine State issue, general election of Myanmar in next year and so on. In Yangon, JMA had a meeting with NLD Youth who would visit Japan in early December and discussed on visiting places and interesting fields in Japan. Moreover, JMA exchanged views & opinion with Myanmar based Japanese companies etc. on the latest situation of Myanmar, general election of Myanmar in next year and so on.

Delegation led by USDP Chairman visited Japan

JMA invited Chairman U Than Htay and its central executive committee member of USDP (Union Solidarity and Development Party), former ruling party of Myanmar. During their stay in Japan, they had meetings with the top of ruling and opposition parties in Japan, directors of JMA, officials of ministries in Japan. They exchanged views & opinions on politics and economy of Myanmar in the future. Moreover, 5 persons of USDP delegation visited House of National Diet, ministries and so on aggressively in Japan. JMA held welcome reception for the delegation on October 28 and had good discussion with them.

JMA supported the 2nd Myanmar Investment Conference organized by JETRO

The State Counsellor, Mrs. Aung san Suu Kyi came to Japan to attend the formal enthronement ceremony. On this occasion, JETRO organized “the 2nd Myanmar Investment Conference” in Tokyo and JMA supported it. More than 700 business persons attended the conference and the room was filled to capacity. A live broadcast was also made over the internet. In the keynote address by the State Counsellor, she called for direct investment from Japan by her own words. Mr. Kyaw Tint Swe, Union Minister for the Office of the State Counsellor made a speech on “Updated of Economic & Investment Policy”.

Winner of the 20th Japanese Speech Contest in Yangon came to Japan

Ms. Tin Nandar Linn, a winner of the 20th Japanese Speech Contest held in this August in Yangon and supported by JMA, came to Japan to make her Japanese language speech in the 34th Japanese Speech Presentation Event on October 10. It was organized by JOEA (Japan Overseas Enterprises Association) and co-organized by ASEAN-JAPAN CENTRE. In the Japanese Speech Presentation Event by 10 winners of Overseas Japanese Speech Contests in ASEAN countries, Ms. Tin Nadar Linn won the award of Secretary General of ASEAN-JAPAN CENTRE. Since the establishment of this award and the award of Chairman of JOEA in 2016, the Myanmar representative has been achieving to receive either award for the fourth consecutive year. On October 8, a welcome reception for Ms. Tin Nandar Lin was held by JMA and JMA Chairman Mr. H. Watanabe presented her DVD in Japanese language.

Delegation led by Commander-In Chief of Defense Service visited Japan

General Koji Yamazaki, Chief of Staff, Joint Staff, formally invited Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, Commander-in-Chief of Defense Services in Myanmar. On this occasion, the Nippon Foundation & JMA co-organized the welcome reception for the delegation in a hotel in Tokyo. In the reception, Mr. Sasakawa, Chairman of the Nippon Foundation & Special Envoy of the Government of Japan for National reconciliation in Myanmar, made a welcome speech and then Mr. Watanabe of JMA Chairman proposed a toast. The reception was useful occasion to exchange and share opinions with the attendees from politics, Ministry of Defense and so on.

Niigata Prefectural Assembly Members visited Yangon

A delegation of “Niigata Prefectural Assembly Southeast Asian Visiting Group” consisting of 10 members of the Niigata Prefectural Assembly visited Yangon from September 10th to 12th. On the 11th, they paid a courtesy visit to Mr. Phyo Min Thein, Chief Minister of Yangon Region and also observed Thilawa SEZ. Mr. Y. Watanabe, a director of JMA guided the delegation in Yangon. At Thilawa SEZ, they visited office of MJTD (Myanmar Japan Thilawa Development Ltd.) and received an explanation about the history of Thilawa development. PCs were donated by JMA to the University of Medical Technology, Yangon

JMA donated 4 personal computers to the University of Medical Technology, Yangon (UMT), which is implementing the “The Technical Cooperation Project for Human Resource Development of Medical Engineering” with support from Japan. The PCs are used to create a database of thousands of medical devices owned by hospitals in Myanmar and use it for future maintenance and management. PCs will be installed in two locations in Yangon and one each in Naypyitaw and Mandalay, and will be operated by Myanmar Medical Engineers who have learned with support from Japan. Mr. Y. Watanabe, a director of JMA attended the donation ceremony held at UMT and the donation was appreciated so much by UMT.

20th Japanese Speech Contest in Yangon supported by JMA

The 20th Japanese Speech Contest was hosted and organized by the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar, the Japan Foundation Yangon and the Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni (MAJA). It was held on August 25 in Yangon and JMA supported the event. 15 persons who had passed the first screening of Japanese Speech Contest out of 104 applicants, performed the final presentation of Japanese language speech on their own topics. They were on various fields such as the first acquaintance and interaction with a Japanese who would support life and education, hopeful dreams in the future, even serious topic like duty of people and so on. The speeches impressed the audience at the venue. Ms. Tin Nandar Linn won the first prize at the contest. As a representative of Myanmar, she will participate in ASEAN Japanese Speech Contest in coming October in Tokyo.

Closing Ceremony on the Project for Enhancement of Medical Education (PEME)

JMA Chairman, Mr. Watanabe attended the Closing Ceremony on the Project for Enhancement of Medical Education (PEME) supported by JICA at a hotel in Yangon on August 6. This project was suggested by JMA and then started from April 2015 in response to a request from former President Mr. Thein Sein to JMA Chairman.
53 out of 67 doctors & engineers who successfully completed the training of PEME in Japan attended the ceremony. Permanent Secretary of Ministry for Health & Sports, Dr. Thet Khaing Win, Japanese Ambassador Mr. Maruyama, on behalf of 6 National Universities Network, President of Okayama University Hospital, Dr. Kanazawa and JICA Myanmar Office Chief Representative, Mr. Karasawa made speeches at the ceremony.
JMA Chairman gave message to the doctors & engineers trained by this project that PEME would contribute greatly to human resource development in medical health field of Myanmar and conveyed great expectations for their performance in the future.

JMA Chairman visited University of Medical Technology, Yangon(UMT)

After the Closing Ceremony on the Project for Enhancement of Medical Education (PEME), JMA Chairman visited UMT to observe progress of “The Technical Cooperation Project for Human Resource Development of Medical Engineering”. This project was also suggested by JMA Chairman and then the lectures started in June of last year and are still ongoing.

JMA Chairman & Director visited Myanmar

JMA Chairman, Mr. H. Watanabe & Director, Mr. Y. Watanabe visited Yangon and Naypyitaw in the middle of July. In Yangon, JMA had a meeting with representatives of JCCM (Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry Myanmar) and exchanged opinion about the 10th anniversary of democratization in 2020. JMA also exchanged opinion with officials of NLD Central Economic Committee about the latest situation of economy and also the general election in 2020.
In Naypyitaw, JMA had meetings with Ministry of Electricity and Energy, Ministry of Border Affair, Ministry of Health & Sports, Ministry of Transport and Communications, Office of the State Counsellor, Commander-in-Chief of Defense Services, officials of USDP and so on. JMA exchanged views and opinions with ministers and officials on various fields like electricity issues, human development, Medical Education Enhancement Project, Rakhine State issue, general election in next year and so on.

JMA Director inspected National MSMEs Products Trade Fair & Contest

National Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Products Trade Fair & Contest was held at MICC II in Naypyitaw for March 22-24. Vice President, Mr. Myint Swe is Chairman of MSMEs Development Working Committee and the committee hosted this national event. The concept of this kind of exhibition was originally introduced and proposed by JMA Chairman, Mr. H. Watanabe to Ministry of Industry to develop MSMEs in Myanmar. The 1st exhibition was held in Mandalay in February, 2018 and exhibitions were continuously held in 9 regions and states for 1 year. This national event in Naypyitaw was the 10th exhibition for national competition and many people visited MICC II. JMA Director, Mr. Y. Watanabe inspected 271 booths displayed at MICC II and Vice President, Mr. Myint Swe expressed his gratitude to JMA’s contribution on the occasion of this national event.

In Yangon, JMA had meetings with officials of YCDC, officials of NLD Central Economic Committee, officials of DICA etc. Wide range matters including the latest situation of investment to Thilawa SEZ and to Myanmar were discussed between JMA and officials.

Officials and staffs from Myanmar Posts & Telecommunications (MPT) visited Japan to attend a workshop of training course. MPT is a partner of mobile phone business with KDDI & Sumitomo Corporation. NLD Vice Chairman & Chief Minister of Mandalay visited Japan

Dr. Zaw Myint Maung who takes significant post of NLD as Vice Chairman & Chief Minister of Mandalay Region Government in Myanmar, visited Japan in early March to have meetings with key members of National Diet both from ruling and opposition parties in Japan. It was the first time for him to come to Japan but he could have very active meetings with the key members arranged by JMA Chairman. JMA Director made a survey to find local specialty in Myanmar

As a JMA’s support to develop local specialty in Myanmar and promote the products of Myanmar to overseas market, JMA director visited and inspected a factory of health-care products made from natural herb. It took about 10 hours by car to reach the factory in Indaw of Sagaing Region from Mandalay. The company displayed its products in the 7th exhibition of MSMEs’ products in Yangon in last November and it drew interest from visitors. The company promote employment of local female workers and such business stance of management of the company is preferable and further development shall be expected.

JMA Chairman & Director visited Myanmar

JMA Chairman, Mr. H. Watanabe & Director, Mr. Y. Watanabe visited Naypyitaw, Yangon, Myitkyina of Kachin State and Mandalay from the end of January to early February.
In Naypyitaw, JMA had meetings with high officials of USDP, Union Minister for Border Affairs, Union Minister for Industry, Union Minister for Office of the State Counsellor, Union Minister for electricity and Energy, Union Minister for Commerce, Union Minister for Transport and Communications, Union Minister for Investment and Foreign Economic Relations, Commander-in-Chief of Defense Services etc. JMA exchanged views and opinions with them on various matters like technical intern trainees to Japan, the vocational training school, training for agricultural practice, electricity, Thilawa SEZ, new terminal of Thilawa Port, the issue on Rakhine State and so on.
In Yangon, JMA Chairman & Director attended the Scholarship Awarding Ceremony at Yangon Technical University and JMA Chairman made a speech for the awarded students. They also inspected the project site now under installation of Ductile cast iron pipe from water treatment plant, which is supported by Japan. In Myitkyina of Kachin State, JMA had a meeting with Mr. Hkyet Awng, Chief Minister of Kachin State Government and shared opinion on regional development etc. Moreover, JMA Chairman & Director attended donation ceremony of new building to an elementary school.
In Mandalay, JMA had meeting with Chief Minister of Mandalay Region Government, Dr. Zaw Myint Maung. He is planning to visit Japan in coming early March and shared opinions on his schedule in Japan to support him. Human development and vocational training etc. were also discussed.

The ceremony for the 71th Anniversary of the Independence Day of Myanmar was held by the Embassy of Myanmar (EOM) on January 24 and so many guests attended the ceremony in Ayeyarwady Hall of EOM. The 7th exhibition of products by MSMEs of Yangon Region was held in Yangon and more than 300 companies displayed their products at the exhibition. Japanese Ambassador Mr. Maruyama, officials from JETRO, JMA director Mr. Watanabe observed the exhibition. JMA introduced a branding way of local specialty and also success stories in the overseas market by Japanese specialists. Participants at the exhibition showed keen interests in such lectures by the specialists. JMA is going to support development of local specialty in Myanmar and promote the products of Myanmar to overseas market.

Speech by MTSH Chairman, Mr. Win Aung and Welcome Reception

JMA invited Mr. Win Aung, Chairman of MTSH (Myanmar Thilawa SEZ Holdings Public Limited) who has been making a substantial contribution to success of Thilawa SEZ and hosted his lecture and welcome dinner reception in Tokyo. Nearly 100 persons of JMA directors, JMA members and concerned persons to Myanmar participated in the event. At the lecture, Mr. Win Aung gave a speech about a great support from Japanese Government, leadership of Mr. H. Watanabe of JMA Chairman for promotion of Thilawa SEZ and also effort of everyone for Thilawa SEZ.
Moreover, Mr. Christopher Aung, Vice President of MJTD(Myanmar Japan Thilawa Development Ltd.)gave a lecture about the latest trend of Myanmar economy and investment environment of Myanmar.

Winner of the 19th Japanese Speech Contest in Yangon came to Japan

Ms. Nway Oo Khine, a winner of the 19th Japanese Speech Contest in this August in Yangon came to Japan to make her Japanese language speech in the 33nd Japanese Speech Presentation Event on October 18 organized by JOEA (Japan Overseas Enterprises Association), co-organized by ASEAN-JAPAN CENTRE and supported by The Japan Foundation. JMA awarded a prize of round trip airplane ticket for her to come to this Tokyo event. Winners from ASEAN 10 countries also participated in this event. Ms. Nway Oo Khine made Japanese speech on “My Dream Given by Children” and she won the special award of Secretary General of ASEAN-JAPAN CENTRE. The winners stayed in Japan for a week and had factory tour, opportunity to have cultural exchange with people of same generation in Japan and other events.

Outstanding Students came to Japan from Myanmar

Myanmar Japan Association (MJA) has been organizing to send outstanding students to Japan since 2014 and JMA has been supporting this event. The 5th event in this year, a total of 18 students including 6 students from Japanese Language Course of Yangon & Mandalay Foreign Languages University and 12 students from high schools in Myanmar visited Japan. The outstanding teenagers stayed with host families in Miyagi Prefecture and had cultural exchange with young people of same generation by cooperation and support of Miyagi MeiSen Academy. JMA hosted a dinner reception for the students and Myanmar Ambassador also attended this event. The students visited the House of Representatives of the National Diet by JMA’s arrangement, Sky Tree Tower, a plant of beverages in Tokushima, the Otsuka Museum of Art and so on. JMA is going to support this event to strengthen friendship between two countries furthermore.

The State Counsellor, Mrs. Aung san Suu Kyi came to Japan to attend the 10th Mekong-Japan Summit Meeting in Tokyo. On this occasion, JETRO organized “Myanmar Investment Conference” in Tokyo and JMA supported it. More than 400 business persons attended the conference and the room was filled to capacity. Senior Staff of Ministry of Border Affairs were invited to Japan

JMA invited 3 senior working staffs of Ministry of Border Affairs to Japan. They are in charge of agriculture and vocational training in the ministry to observe agricultural activities in Japan and to utilize them in a model of agricultural development for the border region in Myanmar. The agriculture is the most important sector for Myanmar. They visited Niigata Prefecture as it is one of the biggest agriculture prefectures in Japan. They observed Niigata prefectural Agricultural College, Niigata Agricultural Research Institute, land improvement district, rice mill and vocational training center to learn new technology of agriculture in Japan.

Ms. Nway Oo Khine, the 3rd grade of Yangon University of Foreign Language, Japanese Department won the first prize through competition of very high level performance. Her subject was “Children who gave me a dream” and she showed her will to improve a situation that would not allow children to have education because of their poverty. Her speech moved all audience in the venue. She will participate in ASEAN Speech Contest in coming October in Tokyo. JMA awarded a prize of round trip airplane ticket to Tokyo to the winner, Ms. Nway Oo Khine.

The 3rd exhibition of products by local MSMEs was held in Ayeyarwady

MSMEs (micro, small and medium enterprises) in Ayeyarwady Region exhibited their products in Pathein. It was the 3rd exhibition hosted by Ministry of Industry. Small and Medium Enterprises Development Committee (SMEDC) Chairman and Vice President Mr. Myint Swe, SMEDC Vice Chairman and Union Minister for Industry Mr. Khin Maung Cho and JMA Director Mr. Y. Watanabe attended the exhibition. The concept of this exhibition was originally introduced and proposed by JMA Chairman to Ministry of Industry to develop SME in Myanmar. After the 1st exhibition in Mandalay, Ministry of Industry hosted the same in Magway as the 2nd one. Other regions and states will follow and finally Naypyitaw will host the national-level exhibition and a final winner in Myanmar will be selected.

The first exhibition of products by local MSMEs was held in Mandalay

MSMEs (micro, small and medium enterprises) from Mandalay Region and Kachin State exhibited their products in Mandalay. It was the first exhibition hosted by Ministry of Industry and JMA supported it. The concept of this exhibition was originally proposed to Ministry of Industry by Chairman of JMA to develop SME in Myanmar. After the this first exhibition, Ministry of Industry will host the same in other regions and states and evaluate the quality of products by MSMEs. Naypyitaw will host the national-level exhibition and national level award winners will be selected from the national-wide exhibitions.

JMA Chairman & Director visited Myanmar for December 20 - 26. In Naypyitaw, they had meetings with Union Minister for Industry, Union Minister for Labour, Immigration and Population, Permanent Secretary and officials from Ministry of Health and Sports. JMA exchanged views and opinions with them on the vocational training school, support for development of SME, job placement in Myanmar for technical intern trainees after their returning from Japan, development of human resources for nursing care and the issue on Rakhine State. In Yangon, JMA had meeting with officials of JCCM (Japan Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Myanmar) and requested their support on the employment in Myanmar for technical intern trainees coming back from Japan. JMA Chairman & Director had meeting also with Commander-in-Chief of Defense Services. In Mandalay, JMA had meeting with Chief Minister of Mandalay Region Government, Dr. Zaw Myint Maung and exchanged opinions on support for vocational training school under Ministry of Industry and also on exhibition of region products including traditional craft products & agricultural crops to develop SME in the Region. Winner of the 18th Japanese Speech Contest in Yangon came to Japan

Ms. Khin Sabai Sint, a winner of the 18th Japanese Speech Contest held in this August in Yangon came to Japan to present her Japanese language speech for Japan Overseas Enterprises Association (JOEA) that hosted and organized the 32nd winners’ event of Japanese speech. JMA awarded a prize of round trip airplane ticket to Tokyo to her in this August. Winners from Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia also participated in this event. They stayed in Japan for about a week and had factory tour, opportunity to have cultural exchange with people of same generation in Japan and so on. The event of Japanese language speech was held by JOEA on October 26 in Tokyo. Ms. Khin Sabai Sint presented a speech on the subject of “Sincerity” and won a prize of “Chairman of JOEA” successfully in the event.

JMA Vice Chairman, Mr. Sengoku visited Myanmar

Mr. Sengoku visited Naypyitaw and Yangon in the middle of October. In the Ministry of Health, he exchanged opinion on spread of appropriate medicines & drugs and also utilization of medical devices. In the Ministry of Industry, he discussed on expansion & improvement of vocational education and training school.

Outstanding Students came to Japan from Myanmar

Myanmar Japan Association (MJA) has been organizing to send outstanding students to Japan since 2014 and JMA has been supporting this event. This year, a total of 16 students including 5 students from Japanese Language Course of Yangon Foreign Languages University and 11 students from high schools in Myanmar visited Japan. The outstanding teenagers stayed with host families and had cultural exchange with young people of same generation by cooperation and support of Miyagi MeiSen Academy. JMA hosted a dinner reception on October 17 and in return for this, students showed performances of songs and dances in Myanmar. On October 18, the students visited the House of Representatives of the National Diet by JMA’s arrangement. JMA is going to support this event to strengthen friendship between two countries furthermore.

Senior General, Min Aung Hlaing visited Thilawa SEZ

Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, accompanied by Commander-in-Chief (Navy) Admiral Tin Aung San, Commander-in-Chief (Air) General Khin Aung Myint, senior military officers of the Office of the Commander-in-Chief (Army) and the Yangon Command commander, visited Thilawa Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for the first time and inspected there on September 9. At the administration office of Myanmar Japan Thilawa Development Limited (MJTD), JMA Chairman, Mr. Watanbe and MJTD CEO Mr. Yanai reported on the establishment of Thilawa SEZ, signing of the agreements with 85 companies and the starting of operation works by 34 companies, regional development and environmental conservation tasks, import and export activities in the zone, the function of one-stop service center and so on.

18th Japanese Speech Contest in Yangon

The 18th Japanese Speech Contest was hosted and organized by the Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni (MAJA) and the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar. It was held on August 20 in Yangon and JMA participated as co-sponsor. 13 persons who passed the primary examination among 49 applicants, performed Japanese language speech on the day. They performed the speech on various fields such as memory with family, dream in the future, Japanese culture & technology, social issues and the venue in Yangon was so exciting. JMA Chairman, Mr. Watanabe guided the union minister to Niigata Prefecture that is one of the biggest agricultural prefectures in Japan. The 4th Study Meeting on Human Resource Development for Medical Devices in Myanmar

The 4th study meeting was held on May 18, 2017 in Tokyo and a number of people such as relevant ministries and agencies, universities, related technical association societies attended the meeting. The latest situation of setting up educational programs to develop Medical Engineers at University of Medical Technology, Yangon was introduced to the attendees. It has been supported and promoted mainly by Okayama University, Japan Association for Clinical Engineers (JACE) and Japanese Society for Technology of Blood purification. Under support of JICA, it is planned to have a research in Myanmar to start the course in FY2018 and the subject discussed in this study meeting is going forward to be materialized. Moreover, in the study meeting, NIPRO Corporation as a medical device manufacturer introduced its activities in overseas market and then opinions were exchanged among attendees. JMA is going to support the Human Resource Development for Medical Devices in Myanmar.

The 7th Japan Cup, Karatedo Championship was jointly organized by Japanese Embassy in Myanmar, Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Myanmar and Yangon Japanese Association etc. and held in Yangon. The Commencement Ceremony of Thilawa SEZ Zone B Project

The Thilawa SEZ (special economic zone) has been supported by both the government and private sectors of Japan for the success. On February 24, the Commencement Ceremony of Thilawa SEZ Zone B (101-hectare) Project was held as an expansion after Zone A (405-hectare) project, which has been already in operation since September, 2015. Vice-President Mr. Henry Van Thio, Union Minister for Commerce Dr. Than Myint, Japanese Ambassador Mr. Higuchi, JMA Chairman Mr. Watanabe, JMA Vice Chairman Mr. Sengoku and also many officials from Myanmar and Japan attended the ceremony and cut a ribbon together. The 4th SME Business Matching was held on February 23 at UMFCCI’s office with captioned formation. The participants from Japanese 9 companies and around 30 Myanmar ones got together and had meeting for whole day to find out potential business partners. Japanese participants attended the commencement ceremony of Thilawa SEZ Zone B Project on February 24.
JMA arranged lectures for the participants on the latest general situation of Myanmar, advantage of investing in Myanmar and policy of Japanese assistance for Myanmar etc. Those were given by 3 gentlemen from JCCM (Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Myanmar), JETRO and Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

Welcome Reception for Dr. Than Myint, Union Minister for Commerce

Dr. Than Myint of Union Minister visited Japan from February 13 to 18 and had meetings with Japanese government officials and visited facilities relevant to infrastructure development in Japan. Dr. Than Myint is one of very important union ministers in current NLD government and by taking this opportunity, JMA hosted a welcome reception for Dr. Than Myint. As it was the first time for the union minister to visit Japan officially, many officials from Japanese government, organizations and member companies of JMA attended the welcome reception to deepen friendship between Myanmar and Japan. Mr. Khin Maung Cho of Union Minister visited Japan from February 8 to 11 to inspect activities of SME and automobile manufacturer in Japan. During his stay in Japan, he had meetings with Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry and also officials in the ministry to exchange views and opinions on policy for development of SME. On this occasion, JMA hosted and held a dinner reception for the minister on February 9 in Tokyo. The ceremony for the 69th Independence Day of Myanmar was held by the Embassy of Myanmar (EOM) on January 30. So many guests attended the ceremony at Ayeyarwady Hall of EOM. The 3rd Study Meeting on Human Resource Development for Medical Devices in Myanmar

The 3rd study meeting on human resource development for medical devices in Myanmar was held and a number of people such as relevant ministries and agencies, universities, related technical association societies attended. On that day, Ms. Junko Sato, Office Director, Office of International Cooperation, Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA) gave a lecture on PMDA's activities in Asia, then FUJIFILM Corporation and Sysmex Corporation as medical device manufacturers. In addition, there was a report from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry on the public and private delegation dispatched to Myanmar in FY2016. After that, we discussed future strategic approach to human resource development for Myanmar.

The 1st Information Exchange Meeting on Technical Intern Trainees Development

The 1st ”Information Exchange Meeting" on technical intern trainees development was hosted by JMA in Tokyo and 39 agencies of supervising organization that receive the trainees from Myanmar attended this event from all over the country.
Mr. Sengoku, Vice Chairman of MJA made an opening remarks and keynote speech to the attendees. Then explanations on the new technical internship program enacted in late November were given by Mr. Yamada, Director, Department of Capacity Development, Ministry of Health, Labor & Welfare and then on Immigration Control Law by Mr. Maruyama, Director of Immigration Bureau, Ministry of Justice respectively. In addition, JMA reported its performance on prior inspection entrusted since January 2016 from the Ministry of Labor, Immigration Control and Population of Myanmar and the Embassy of Myanmar in Japan, and thereafter requests, comments and information exchange etc. from agencies of supervising organization to JMA were carried out in the meeting.

Economic Delegation was dispatched to Myanmar by JMA

From November 14 to 16, the economic delegation headed by Mr. Watanabe, Chairman of JMA visited Myanmar. The delegation met major ministers and organizations such as Dr. Than Myint of Union Minister for Commerce, Mr. Khin Msung Cho of Union Minister for Industry, Dr. Myint Htwe of Union Minister for Health and Sports, members of NLD Economic Committee, members of UMFCCI (Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry) and exchanged valuable opinions with them in Myanmar. About 60 business persons including from corporations invested to Thilawa SEZ development participated in the delegation. Welcome Reception for Mr. Kyaw Win, Union Minister for Planning and Finance

Mr. Kyaw Win of Union Minister for Planning and Finance who accompanied H.E. Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi, State Counsellor of Myanmar and he visited Japan from November 1 to 9. He is one of key union ministers of Myanmar. The welcome reception for him was hosted by JMA and held at the Hotel New Otani Tokyo on November 7. More than 200 persons including 8 persons from the Ministry, about 40 persons from UMFCCI, Japanese government officials and member companies of JMA attended this event and the venue was almost overflowing. In the opening remarks, Mr. Watanabe, Chairman of JMA put his heart into public and private support for the development of Myanmar. Union Minister, Mr. Kyaw Win expressed his gratitude for the Japan's support for Myanmar's economic development and highlighted the current very close relationship between Myanmar and Japan.

Welcome Reception for Mr. Thant Sin Maung, Union Minister for Transport and Communications

The welcome reception for Mr. Thant Sin Maung of Union Minister and his seven members from the ministry was hosted by JMA at the Hotel New Otani on October 21. The minister visited Japan from October 17 to 21 and had meetings with Japanese Government Officials and private companies. About 100 people attended the reception and it was a great welcome event. At the reception, Mr. Watanabe, Chairman of JMA expressed his passion for development of Myanmar and the minister replied that "In Myanmar, it is difficult for us to find some fields without Japanese support and we, Myanmar appreciates it so much.” In this reception, Lami Corporation Inc., a member of JMA and has been promoting manufacturing business in Myanmar, donated laminating machines to the minister, which would be very useful and efficient for works in the post office of Myanmar.

Outstanding Students came to Japan from Myanmar

Myanmar Japan Association (MJA) organizes to send students to Japan every year, who achieves outstanding performance at school. This year, a total of 16 students including 6 students from Japanese Language course of Yangon Foreign Languages University and 10 students from high schools in Myanmar visited Japan. The outstanding teenagers, they stayed in Japan during October 9-15 by cooperation and support of Miyagi MeiSen Academy. The 2nd study tour and briefing on TVET survey

The 2nd study tour and a briefing session to concerned organizations and persons from private companies in Japan were carried out for 3 days from October 4 on Myanmar Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET). The survey was entrusted to JMA from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Persons in charge from Myanmar Ministry of Education(MOE), Ministry of Industry(MOI), Ministry of Labor, Immigration and Population(MOLIP) and Myanmar Engineering Society(MES) participated in the study tour and they visited Polytechnic University (Human Resources Development University) in Kodaira, Tokyo and also Amada, a private company in Isehara, Kanagawa prefecture to develop comprehensive Knowledge on TVET. At the briefing session where domestic companies and organizations participated, a draft of the final survey report was explained and in the speech, Mr. Sengoku, Vice Chairman of JMA pointed out the importance of TVET and emphasized the necessity of Japan's support to Myanmar. The 2nd Meeting on Myanmar Medical Equipment Human Resource Development Study

In Myanmar, in addition to shortages of human resources of physicians and nurses, a shortage of human resources such as engineers who can utilize medical equipment etc. is also one of issues from a view of supporting medical system. JMA is conducting study sessions with relevant ministries, agencies and organizations etc. in order to examine how to support the training of medical human resources in Myanmar who have knowledge and experience of medical equipment etc. The 2nd study meeting was held on September 26. In the meeting, Dr. Misawa from Japanese Association of Medical Technologists gave a lecture on the direction of support based on experiences of clinical laboratory technique activities in developing countries and Dr. Kokubo from Kitasato University gave a lecture on technical support activities for hemodialysis therapy in Myanmar. After the lectures, active opinions were exchanged among the attendees. JMA will continue the study meeting also from now on to consider effective and efficient way of support for Myanmar.

Lt-Gen Sein Win, Union Minister for Defense visited Japan to attend the 8th Japan-ASEAN Defense Vice-Ministerial Forum in Sendai for September 20-21 and to make keynote speech at the forum. On this occasion, JMA Chairman Mr. Watanabe, JMA Vice Chairman Mr. Sengoku and JMA Director Mr. Y. Watanabe had the meeting with the minister and exchange opinions about defense cooperation, interchange program of official class that the Nippon Foundation is supporting and students sent abroad by the national army.

Lunch reception with international students from Myanmar in this year

JMA has been supporting Myanmar international students to International University of Japan (IUJ) with the cooperation of JICA and the Nippon Foundation. This year, 15 students came to Japan as the 4th generation students. Prior to starting studies at IUJ from the end of September, a lunch reception was held on September 18 with JMA Chairman Mr. Watanabe and JMA Vice Chairman Mr. Sengoku in attendance of Myanmar Ambassador. Mr. Thurain Thant Zin.
This year, for further enhancement of this program, JMA provided a doctoral course newly and 2 re-enrolled students were included in the program. Mr. Watanabe encouraged the students by a word that "I would like you to learn a lot in Japan, to absorb various knowledge, to gain your experience and make effort for the development of your home country."

Dr. Myint Htwe visited Japan to attend the G7 Health Minister’s Meeting to be held in Kansai region, on this occasion, JMA hosted and held a dinner reception for the minister on September 15 in Tokyo.
JMA Chairman Mr. Watanabe, JMA Vice Chairman Mr. Sengoku, Myanmar Ambassador Mr. Thurain Thant Zin, persons from the Nippon Foundation, related Japanese ministries, six national universities, Seisa Group and others attended the reception. The minister expressed his gratitude for the past supports from Japan in the field of medical assistance. JMA offered the minister further cooperation not only in health and sports but also support for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo by close co-working with the ministry.

JMA visited Myanmar to request cooperation from Ministry of Industry for this year's business matching program held in Myanmar. It was agreed upon with the ministry that the same cooperation as well as the last year would be extended to JMA in this fiscal year. JMA discussed also the issues on technical intern trainees at the Ministry of Labor and the projects on vocational training at the Ministry of Education. Moreover, JMA attended a reporting session on vocational training project in Myanmar on September 13.

Interim report meeting on TVET survey at MES in Yangon

An interim reporting session on TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) survey was held on September 13 at MES (Myanmar Engineering Society) in Yangon.
The purpose of this session was to explain the content of interim survey report in this August in Japan and to hear opinions from Myanmar side. About 120 persons including officials from both countries, representatives from related organizations, top management from member companies of MES etc. attended the session.
Following the speech by Mr. Maruyama, Minister of Japanese Embassy and also Dr. Sai Kyaw Naing Oo, Deputy Director General, Department of Technical and Vocational Education, Ministry of Education, the session of interim report explanation started. In the Q & A, the attendees stated their opinions of requesting urgent actions to enhance vocational training. The final survey report will be released in October.

The 17th Japanese Language Speech Contest was held in Yangon

The 17th Japanese Language Speech Contest was hosted and organized by the Myanmar Association of Japan Alumni (MAJA) and the Embassy of Japan in Myanmar. It was held on August 28 in Yangon and JMA participated as co-sponsor. 15 persons who passed the primary examination among 53 applicants, performed Japanese language speech on the day. They performed the speech on culture such as Japanese pop and RAKUGO, such as hot feelings about their own Japanese learning and their own place of birth. 15 persons each made a different speech and the venue in Yangon was so exciting.

As a part of basic survey on Myanmar's Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) that was entrusted to JMA from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), government officials of Myanmar visited Japan and the study tour in Japan was carried out for 8 days from August 4. Total 10 persons, 3 persons each from Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Labor and 1 person from Myanmar Engineering Society(MES) participated in the tour. During their stay in Japan, they made inspections at Rokugo Technical High School Tokyo, Kanto Polytechnic Center and Chiba Polytechnic College etc.

Mr. Watanabe, Chairman of JMA had a meeting with Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation

Dr. Tun Win, Deputy Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation, Mr. Naing Kyi Win, Director for Department of Agriculture Research and other Myanmar officials visited Japan in July by the invitation of Japanese government and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). On this occasion, Chairman Mr. Watanabe hosted a dinner reception for them in Tokyo. The purpose of the Deputy Minister's visiting to Japan is to make inspections on organization and mechanism of National federation of Agricultural Cooperative Association (JA) and widely observe Japanese agricultural policies. In the meeting, Mr. Watanabe introduced "One Village One Product Movement" in Oita prefecture and a wide range of opinion was exchanged on various issues concerning animals and plants quarantine. Mr. Watanabe expressed “Agriculture is the most important industry for Myanmar and JMA is going to support Myanmar as much as possible by close contacting the Ministry for Agriculture”.

10 Students from Myanmar graduated from International University of Japan

JMA has been supporting Myanmar students to study at International University of Japan (IUJ) with the cooperation of JICA and the Nippon Foundation since 3 years ago. This year, 10 students from Myanmar graduated successfully from IUJ. On this occasion, a congratulatory dinner reception was hosted by Mr. Watanabe, Chairman of JMA in attendance of Mr. Thurain Thant Zin of Myanmar Ambassador. Mr. Watanabe gave well-wishing words to the students that "I want you to become a pillar of Myanmar country and support the country." A representative of students expressed their appreciation for providing valuable experience and that "By learnt knowledge and valuable experience in Japan, we would like to make our best efforts to develop my home country". The abroad study for 2 years at IUJ will be fully utilized in Myanmar by the students and they will contribute to the development of country in the future.

The roundtable meeting with Mr. Thurain Thant Zin, Ambassador of Myanmar was held at Myanmar Embassy on June 20 by coordination and initiative of JMA according to ambassador’s intention and request. About 60 persons from 34 JMA member companies attended the meeting. In the meeting, the ambassador asked the member companies for facing problems, issues to be improved, concerned matters etc... when they are doing business in Myanmar and/or planning to get into Myanmar market in the future. For 2 hours meeting, the ambassador explained and answered on the issues and questions seriously by himself and then exchanged opinions and views with attendees.

Launched the 1st Study Meeting on Human Resource Development for Medical Devices in Myanmar

In addition to shortages of human resources of physicians and nurses in Myanmar, a shortage of human resources such as engineers who can utilize medical equipment is an issue from a view of supporting medical system. JMA has decided to aggressively support the training of Myanmar medical human resources who have knowledge and experience of medical equipment in addition to JMA’s support for launching a project by 6 national universities’ medical faculty department to enhance medical education in Myanmar. In order to examine strategic ways for development of human resources in Myanmar, a study group was organized by related ministries, agencies and organizations etc. and then the 1st study meeting was held on June 10. Professor Kimata of Okayama University and Vice Chairman Dr. Matsumoto of the Japan Federation of Medical Devices Association (JFMDA) gave lectures to attendees and the opinions were exchanged aggressively in the meeting. JMA is going to continue the study meeting and to consider an effective and efficient way of support also from now on.
